🇿🇦🇮🇱 South Africa foreign minister says all states must stop funding Israel's military
All states have an obligation to stop funding and facilitating Israel's military actions in Gaza after the World Court made clear those actions could be genocidal, South Africa's foreign minister said.
Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor also said she had met the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court last week to discuss a joint referral South Africa made in November with other countries about the situation in the Palestinian territories.
"I asked him why he was able to issue an arrest warrant for Mr Putin and is unable to do so for the prime minister of Israel. He did not answer that question. But I read into some of what he said that the investigations are still under way," Pandor told.

🇨🇳🏦 Absa bank to open branch in China
On Wednesday, Johannesburg-listed Absa said it was opening a non-banking subsidiary in Beijing to support Chinese customers as part of its strategy to offer expertise on African markets to foreign clients.
Buss said Absa was still nurturing close relationships with Chinese state-owned enterprises and development finance institutions, which would continue to play an important role in Beijing's ambitions in Africa. Absa's Chinese subsidiary, however, would allow the bank to better understand the needs of new and potential clients.
"It's very key to be in China so that we can ... understand which corporates are having a strategy shift towards Africa and where they may be investing," she said.
Buss said there had been significant investment by Chinese companies in mining and mining infrastructure, particularly in the critical minerals sector in countries including Zambia.
Chinese firms were also moving deeper into technology and telecoms, light manufacturing, and agriculture with Kenya, Ghana and increasingly Tanzania, Uganda and Mozambique as their target markets.

Minister of Justice Ronald Lamola cries about seeing the Vierkleur Flag at the Groblersdal rally organised by the Bittereinders
In a statement released by the minister yesterday, he condemns the use of the Vierkleur (also known as the Transvaal flag) by protestors as it "is deeply troubling" and a "symbol that represents colonisation and aparthied. [sic]"
He then goes on to quote a court ruling from 2019 that banned the gratuitous display of the so-called "Apartheid flag" used by the South African government between 1928 and 1994. This is, of course, a different flag representing a different state. The Vierkleur has been used over various time periods as a representation of the Boers and later the Transvaal region and the South African Republic (ZAR) before annexation by the British Empire in 1902.
Lamola goes on to say that people who brandish the Vierkleur are "rejecting the core values of democracy, equality, and the Constitution."

🇲🇿🇿🇦 Mozambique seeks to end 50-year hydropower pact with South Africa
Mozambique plans to end half a century of hydropower supply to South Africa’s State-owned electricity utility, raising risks for the continent’s most industrialized economy and threatening the viability of Africa’s second-biggest aluminum smelter.
In the country’s yet-to-be published energy transition strategy, a copy of which Bloomberg has seen, Mozambique details the plan to secure the 1,150 megawatts of power it sells to South Africa from its Cahora Bassa plant for its own use.
“The main short-term hydro priority is the repatriation of electricity from Hidroelectrica de Cahora Bassa currently exported to South Africa” when the contract ends on Dec. 31, 2030, the government said in the strategy document. Mozambique’s energy ministry didn’t respond to a request for comment.
The decision creates a headache for both South Africa — which is battling power cuts that are holding back economic growth — and South32 Ltd., which operates the Mozal aluminum smelter near Mozambique’s capital, Maputo, but uses electricity bought from South African utility Eskom Holdings.
Eskom said it’s unaware of the desire to not renew the contract.
